Assessing Learning Disorders, Autism, Co-existing & Related Conditions
While our physicians and some of our nurse practitioners can evaluate for ADHD, anxiety, and related conditions, we are fortunate to have a clinical social worker who can take more time to really delve into symptoms and concerns during the evaluation process. He will see most of our patients for the initial evaluation and any behavioral follow up visits that are clinically indicated. This helps to get a more thorough evaluation done in a timely fashion and the first visit with the physician or nurse practitioner can be more effective at discussing a medical treatment plan. We find this helps to get an accurate and timely diagnosis as well as to utilize the first visit with the pediatrician or nurse practitioner more effectively talking about the treatment options rather than trying to do it all in one visit.
If the diagnosis is unclear, or there are other concerns, such as specific learning disabilities, autism, or multiple diagnoses are being considered, further evaluation from a psychologist or learning specialist can be helpful.
Neuropsychological and psychological tests, along with information from caregivers, teachers, and the student can be used to evaluate cognitive, behavioral, and emotional characteristics. Psychologists, speech pathologists, and educational specialists can test for specific learning disabilities.
Sometimes a school district can offer neuropsychological testing. The following businesses offer various types of testing (in alphabetical order and services listed are from their websites - see the linked sites for more information). We do not prefer any of these locations. Personal preference, availability, insurance coverage, and cost should be used to find the right location for your family.
