Suture and Staple Removal

Wound care after Sutures or Staples are removed:

  • Protect the wound from injury during the month after injury.
  • Avoid sports that could re-injure the wound. If a sport is essential, cover with tape before playing.
  • Allow the scab to fall off on its own. Do not try to pick it off.
  • If there are NO steristrips, you may put petrolatum jelly or antibiotic ointment on the area until it no longer has any scab to help it heal faster. If there are steristrips, do NOT apply any ointment because it will cause the strips to fall off prematurely.
  • Avoid swimming until the skin is healed without scab.
