Asthma Care
Asthma & Allergy Management
Our practice provides a comprehensive asthma and allergy management program for our patients. Our pediatricians and nurse practitioners are trained in the diagnosis and management of childhood asthma and allergies.
In our office we can check oxygen levels, measure lung function, give breathing treatments, and temporarily give oxygen.
Diagnosis of asthma is usually made during a sick visit when a child is wheezing or exhibiting symptoms of allergies. Occasionally we may discuss asthma or allergies during a preventive care visit based on patient or parent concerns or our exam findings, but a dedicated visit to fully evaluate symptom control is also needed regularly.
Pulmonary Function Testing
Pulmonary function testing (spirometry) can be done when indicated at our offices. The test results will be shared with you to help guide treatment.
This is a non-invasive test performed in all patients age 5 or older (based on their ability to do it) to assess lung function, response to medication, and to assess overall asthma control.
Asthma Action Plans
Each person who uses inhalers or nebulizers should have an Asthma Action Plan updated at least yearly. Most daycares and schools can use this to give medication, but if they have special forms to fill out please bring them to your routine asthma visits.
Asthma Education
We teach about environmental controls and avoidance of triggers at asthma visits and supplement the learning with videos so you can better understand asthma.
It is helpful if you bring your inhaler to visits so we can confirm that it is being used correctly.
You can view our Asthma Playlist to watch videos on asthma.
Maintenance Visits
People with asthma should be seen in our office (or by the allergist or pulmonologist who manages it if they are not managed in our office) every 3-12 months depending on their severity of illness and their asthma control. Regular visits are required in order for us to evaluate your child prior to medication refills and to complete any required school forms.
